Are the Simpsons in Springfield, Illinois?

The Simpson's are in Springfield, Anystate. The author chose the name 'Springfield' because there is a Springfield in every state of the union. That way, no one could be alienated or left out by picking a specific location. Actually, there isn't a Springfield in every state. Groening believed it was the most common town name, however he was wrong. In Season 9 Episode 22 Homer talks about how the nearby cities needing somewhere else to store their waste. As this scene is playing a garbage truck drives in with the word CHICAGO on the side of it. Chicago is in Illinois so it would make sense that The Simpson’s takes place is Springfield, IL.
