What is a comma splice?

A comma splice is when a comma is used to join two independent clauses in a sentence. Normally, you should use a semicolon or conjunction to combine them. Some examples of comma splices:
It is pitch black, you are likely to be eaten by a grue.
I have black hair, in addition, I have a pot belly.
I smoke marijuana, hence I have bad grades
